Honoring the Ancestors: A Reflection by Dr. Flora Luyando for Native American Heritage Month

This month, we honor the original caretakers of this land—the Indigenous peoples whose wisdom, spirit, and resilience continue to guide us all. As a descendant of Taíno, Boricua, and Afro-Indigenous roots, I feel the heartbeat of my ancestors in every breath, in every rising sun.

Remembering Our Sacred Lineage

This poem written by Dr. Flora Luyando is a prayer, a declaration, and a reminder that our lineage is sacred—and that remembering who we are is an act of resistance, love, and healing.

Being

By Dr. Flora Luyando

Being
The desire you gave me
Has given me the fortitude to keep rising to the excellence of our Taíno, Boricua, Afro-Indigene of Los Luyando’s Falu.
Yo soy mi papá y él yo!
I am fuel within, and your name will keep forever flowing and flourishing to the montañas de Loíza—hasta los corps de mis padres.
Tú eres el punto de mi mundo.
Yo cargo tu nombre.
The best thing is to hold on to life—I will always love you through life, and dearly hold each other with grace, mercy, and light.
¡Pa’lante siempre!

Deportation who?
Who and why have Americans believed it is a crime to cross borders—it’s a civil land, I say.
It’s got y’all doing exactly what Whitman, colonized racism, colorism, patriotism—all this “ism”—got people buzzing with false equivalence and nonsense!
This is made for you and me—yet who profits?
Unconscious minds of low awareness have made you believe TikTok is truth, and “news” can be just Wikipedia with no facts!

Our land—whose land—when we all understand it’s not anyone’s, but God’s universal language.
Colonizers made even the Asian, Native American, Indian, brown, and Black—shiiittt, even the green—
believe they are not one being.
All of North America was stolen by racist European colonizers, and now they are trying to define borders in another form.

Wake up and stay the fuck down!
I will continue to elevate and know all beings are created equal, without the boundaries of a pap.
I am God’s child from the University of Being.
May we all rise to the Statue of Being, and the Liberty to expand our horizons with love—and the warrior Lord Being I am!

Deportation who?
